The Benefits of Rolfing
Rolfing was created to help rid the body of strenuous patterns of movement by replacing and correcting such patterns with a more regular, gentle and economic blueprint of movement. This is achieved by the practitioner firstly analyzing the posture of the patient when they are walking, sitting and standing. Then lying down on a table, similar to a massage table, the Rolfing practitioner can apply precise pressure to specific areas recognized as being problematic during an initial analysis. By bringing the body back into its optimum posture, physical discomforts can be transformed into movements in tune with the natural equilibrium of the earth's gravitational field. In doing so stress and traumas that have built up within the tissue of the body can be released resulting in over all wellbeing. Changing old postural habits often initiates further changes in life. Rolfing is a holistic process and it has very individual implications for each client.
Some History behind Rolfing
Rolfing was introduced to the world by Dr. Ida P. Rolf who invented the system through her belief that gravity, as an organizing element, is particularly important for the structure of the body, coordination of movement, spatial perception and for human expression. There is, she argued, an optimal, more natural body alignment for each of us, which eases interaction between the self and gravity. When this alignment is lost through external factors, it causes internal stress which can manifest in real discomfort. Prevent or correct the misalignment and the strain may be eliminated or at least limited. This is the central principle underlying Rolfing. Following her observation and incorporating it into body work, Dr. Rolf started to introduce her theory and practice of "Structural Integration' to as many people as possible all over the world. Over time Structural Integration became known as Rolfing as she began to teach this innovative technique to as many practitioners as she could worldwide.
Visceral Therapy is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the body's visceral system (the heart, liver, intestines and other internal organs) to locate and alleviate abnormal points of tension throughout the body. Ferran has integrated his training in this technique to bring us a complete system of body alignment along with Rolfing.
In July 2000 Ferran got injured training for his black belt in Taekwondo in Barcelona. In his own words; "The next 4 years became a nightmare of Physical Therapists, chiropractors, doctors and surgeons... The diagnosis: chronic adductor tendinitis." The physical discomfort was so great that Ferran could no longer indulge in his love of sports and began to accept that his problem would be with him for the rest of his life. In 2004, after a session with a talented osteopath, Ferran found that all his pain was gone in just one session. This discovery sparked his passion to determine the best methods for helping himself overcome his chronic tendinitis. After ten sessions with an expert Rolfer Ferran knew that he had found the answer he had been looking for. Ever since he has trained in Rolfing so that he might help others to change their lives through the relief that this technique can offer.
